Waterproofing Internal Wall Treatment: Permanent Solutions for Damp Walls

Are you struggling with moisture or dampness inside your home walls? Over the years, you may have tried different remedies or followed suggestions from painters, contractors, or acquaintances. Unfortunately, most of these solutions provide only temporary relief.

Here are some common methods homeowners often try:

  1. Applying waterproof putty or chemical coatings while repainting, only to see dampness reappear within months.

  2. Installing tiles or marble up to a certain height on the wall, but noticing moisture above the tiles during the next monsoon.

  3. Coating walls with marble paste or covering them with PVC sheets or posters.

From our 29+ years of experience, we have found that all these approaches fail in the long run because they do not address the root cause of wall dampness. Unless the source of the moisture is identified and resolved, any surface-level treatment will only be a temporary fix.

What Causes Moisture in Internal Walls?

Understanding the source of moisture is the first step in achieving a permanent waterproofing solution.

If moisture appears only during the monsoon:

  1. Small cracks in the exterior walls allow rainwater seepage.

  2. For ground-floor houses, groundwater rises through the foundation into the walls, causing dampness up to 2–3 feet during the humid monsoon and damaging interior paint.

  3. Salt deposits in construction sand react to humidity, creating damp and salty patches on walls.

  4. Moisture on ceilings and upper walls is usually caused by an unprotected terrace or cracks in external walls.

If moisture is present throughout the year:

  • The problem often originates from internal leakages in bathroom pipelines, kitchen drainage lines, or concealed plumbing. This is especially common in flats and tenements.

Unless these underlying causes are eliminated, applying waterproof putty, marble paste, tiles, or chemicals will never deliver long-lasting results.

Waterproofing Internal Wall Treatment Method

(A method you can easily carry out yourself with the help of any contractor)

  1. Remove Old Plaster
Scrape off the old plaster from all damp walls down to the masonry bricks. Remove the plaster up to a minimum height of 3 feet, or the entire area wherever moisture is visible.

  2. Clean the Surface
Use a wire brush to clean the surface thoroughly, then wash the wall well with water.

  3. Apply Primer Coating
Mix 1 part PSV Premix with 2 parts water to prepare a primer. Apply it evenly on the wall using a brush or spray. Allow it to dry for one day. If the coating looks light, apply a second coat.

  4. Prepare Plaster Material
Mix 1 bag of cement (50 kg) with 20 bags of sifted sand to prepare the plaster mix.

  5. Add PSV Premix to Plastering Water
Mix 10% PSV Premix in water (i.e., 10 liters PSV Premix in 100 liters of water). Use this water to prepare the plastering material and apply it evenly to the wall.
Note: Do not apply a separate finishing layer of cement plaster. Instead, apply a single, complete leveling plaster.

  6. Cure the Plaster
Strengthen the plaster by sprinkling water for two consecutive days, then allow it to dry completely.

  7. Apply Protective Coating
On the third day after plastering, prepare a mixture of 1 part PSV Premix with 1 part water. Apply two coats alternately with a brush or roller, then let it dry.

  8. Waterproof the Putty Layer
Before painting, do not mix plain water in the wall putty. Instead, prepare the putty using 1 part PSV Premix with 1 part water, and apply it for added protection.
